Monday, September 21, is the United Nations International Day of Peace. We don’t need to look far to find seemingly endless examples of violence, hatred and destruction. It is an enormous challenge to remain hopeful and to respond to the words of Jesus, “Blessed are the peacemakers…”
Marking a day for a specific focus on peace affirms the belief that each day does matter and does have the potential to make a difference. As we become older, and hopefully wiser, I believe we come to a greater understanding that our days on this earth are not infinite and that we should make each day count. I encourage you to pause on this day and offer a prayer for peace, and to reflect on this message from Network, the National Catholic Social Justice Lobby: “Peacemaking begins within each individual heart. What can each of us do to create the compassion and peace we want in the world?”
