Cabin Fever? Embark on a Literary Adventure!

Books have the power to take us far beyond our ordinary day to day experiences. Here are two recently released books that accomplish that goal with insight and sensitivity.

Half the Sky, written by Pulitzer Prize winning authors Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, presents an idea that was shared by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus and Greg Mortenson at Concordia College in 2008 – that educating and empowering women is the key to changing the world . The stories of these women from around the globe are both heart-breaking and challenging. In spite of enormous poverty, violence and injustice, this book affirms the power of hope and determination to create a better world and encourages all of us to be a part of that transformation.
Those of you who loved Three Cups of Tea (and those who haven’t read it) will be happy to hear more about Greg Mortenson’s work in Afghanistan in Stones into Schools. We don’t often hear good news from Afghanistan, but be assured that the work of the Central Asia Institute in building schools and peace continues.
Both of these books are available at the Fargo Public Library, although they are so popular you might be on the waiting list for a short time.
