Zechariah 9:9-10; Romans 8:9,11-13; Matthew 11:25-30 This weekend we celebrate the 235th anniversary of our independence as a nation. As nations go, we are relatively young historically. Even so in the short 200+ years of our existence we have grown to be the most powerful nation on earth. We have access to (and also consume) the vast majority of the natural resources of the world. We have the most powerful armed forces of any nation in the world. We have the greatest financial resources of any nation in the world. By human standards, we are the greatest. Because of this it is important for us to listen well to today’s readings that speak not of power and greatness but rather of meekness. The prophet Zechariah gives us an image of the messiah riding on a baby donkey. This is not a symbol of human power like a great warrior horse. This symbolizes instead a savior who brings in the reign of peace. And how are we to achieve that peace? By following the way of Jesus, our Savior, who is “meek and humble of heart” (Matthew 11:29) Let’s look a little closer at the word meek. Now some might consider [...]

Deuteronomy 8:2-3,14-16; 1 Corinthians 10:16-17; John 6:51-58[1] The Roman Catholic Church is the largest multi-cultural institution in the entire world. We are virtually on every continent, in nearly every country. On any given day the mass is celebrated in English, Latin, Italian, German, and Spanish, in Hindi, Swahili, Kirundi, the many different dialects of the Asian nations, and even, in some parts of the world in Arabic, the language of the people. We are comprised of every race, color, and nationality. And so today’s feast celebrates the unity of the Body of Christ as present in the worldwide Catholic human family. And so it right and fitting to remember that it all began with a Jewish man and woman by the name of Abraham and Sarah. Through their fidelity to God, they were given an only beloved Son in the person of Isaac. As a test of faith they were to give this child back to God. And because of Abraham’s fidelity God provided a ram, as a scapegoat which was offered in place of the life of Isaac. The foundations of our Eucharist began with another sacrifice in the great Passover event in ancient Egypt. Once again innocent, unblemished [...]

Exodus 24:2-6,8-9; 2 Corinthians 13:11-13; John 3:16-18[1] In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit; a gesture we Catholics do so frequently that we do not often even pay attention to its meaning. Making the sign of the cross is an affirmation of our belief in a God of mystery, a God of three persons who exist in an eternal inseparable unity. Making the sign of the cross is a prayer to that God of mystery. When we don’t know what to say, when we don’t know how to pray, we can always simply make the sign of the cross, invoking God’s name to the situation. This gesture in and of itself becomes our prayer. So Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, is the name by which we know our mysterious God. Names are critical to our coming to know anyone. We cannot begin to understand and appreciate who a person is, without at least knowing his/her name. The sole purpose for us to know another person’s name is that we might enter into some sort of relationship with them. Without a name a person remains a stranger, and perhaps might even be considered [...]

Acts 2:1-11; 1 Corinthians12:3-7,12-13; John 20:19-23 When Luke named the countries which we just heard in the account from the Acts of the Apostles it was kind of like reading a travelogue of the ancient world. The countries named surrounded the Mediterranean Sea. These were many of the very countries to which the apostles and Paul traveled to bring the message of Jesus Christ. Devout Jews of all different races and tongues were gathered together that day in Jerusalem. Why were they there? First of all, they were all Jews, either by birth, or by conversion to Judaism. There were three great Jewish festivals to which every male Jew within twenty miles of Jerusalem were obligated to attend – the Passover, Pentecost, and the Feast of Tabernacles. Jesus and the disciples were in Jerusalem for the Passover when he went through his passion, death and resurrection. Fifty days later the disciples found themselves once again in Jerusalem for Pentecost. This feast was also called the Feast of Weeks because it fell on the fiftieth day, a week of weeks, after the Passover. The Feast had two main significances. The first significance was historical: It commemorated the giving of the Law [...]

Acts 1:1-11; Ephesians; Matthew 28:16-20 After 33 years the circle is complete. The Son of God, who came down from heaven taking on our humble human form, returns in triumph to be reunited with his Father. Father and Son are once again perfectly united in heaven, as they had been for all eternity, but now with one difference. Our humanity, which had been separated from God because of sin, has now been reunited with God through the humanity of Jesus. You could even say that earth now is united to heaven, as we the Church on earth, which is the Body of Christ, remain united with Jesus who is the head. But what is so important about our belief in the ascension? Why did Jesus have to return to heaven? I see three important answers to this question. The first is that as long as Jesus lived on this earth, his works would be limited by our human condition. God though he is, he was also fully human, and could function as God only within the limitations of his humanity. This means, that if he had not ascended to heaven he would still be living somewhere on earth today. Now [...]

Acts 8:14-17; 1 Peter 3:15-18; John 14:15-21 Have you ever been given a gift too complicated for you to use? Unless we read the instructions or someone takes time with us to explain how to use the gift, it may just stay in our closet for years in an unopened box. Unfortunately that is the very case with many Catholics who do not practice their faith. They have been given the gift of membership in the Catholic Church as infants. They know they are Catholics, but they don’t know what that means. Unless they take the initiative to read something about their faith, or unless someone takes the time to sit down and explain it to them, the gift of faith remains largely “unopened.” Kabir, a fifteenth-century poet in India, gives us a key to opening the gift of faith: “He understands who loves.” This poet was saying that we can come to understand another person if we first love that person. The same principle applies to our relationship with God. If we truly want a relationship with God, we must first love God. If we desire to love God, we begin asking ourselves why we should love God. To [...]

Acts 6:1-7; 1 Peter 2:4-9; John 14:1-12 “Do not let your hearts be troubled” (John 14:1). These words, spoken by our Lord at the Last Supper, were intended to bring courage, strength, and hope to the disciples. They would have needed courage before the night was over and throughout the next day as they saw our Lord arrested and crucified. Later, after the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost, they would have found strength from these words in the hope of resurrection and the promise of the heaven to come. This hope and promise was essential to their ability to boldly proclaim the gospel to others. This hope and promise gave them the courage and strength to eventually die for their faith. We know the story of Christ’s life, passion, death and resurrection. The story is planted deeply into our hearts and minds. And if we truly believe in Christ, then we know without a doubt that there is a heaven for those who do His will and a hell for those who refuse Him. And so why is that we have such difficulty letting go of our anxieties and worries? I think a key to this can be [...]

Acts 2:14,36-41; 1 Peter 2:20-25; John 10:1-10 One of the most enduring images of Christ through all the centuries has been that of the Good Shepherd. Centuries before images of the cross were used to mark the graves of believers the image of the Good Shepherd was what was commonly found on tombs. The Good Shepherd, as scripture teaches us, lays down his life for his sheep. His sheep know his voice and follow him. The image of Good Shepherd symbolizes both strength, to ward off the enemies that would try to destroy the sheep, and tenderness to gain the confidence of a tiny lamb, or a timid ewe. The image of shepherd has likewise been seen as a model for the bishop. The crosier, or “shepherd’s staff,” which the bishop carries in liturgies, has been a symbol of the office of the bishop for centuries. As the chief shepherd of the diocese, the bishop is to guide us in the ways of holiness and truth. But unfortunately we live in a day and age when many people no longer believe in absolute truths. Because of this popular opinion is often seen as the litmus test for truth and people [...]

Acts of the Apostles 2:42-47; I Peter 1:3-9; John 20:19-31 “Blest are they who have not seen and have believed” (John 20:29) Sometimes I think Thomas got a bum wrap in John’s Gospel. In the other gospels Thomas is only mentioned in the list of the twelve apostles. In John’s gospel however it is Thomas who is mentioned as the one who doubted. But didn’t all of the disciples have doubts which led them to abandon Jesus on that fateful Good Friday? Wasn’t it their doubt that kept them locked away in that upper room even after the resurrection? Like Thomas, the other disciples did not really believe until they had seen and heard the risen Lord. They too had to see it with their own eyes before they believed. This is one point upon which the gospels agree. All of the disciples were fearful because of the loss of Jesus. So fearful that when he appeared to them they did not recognize him and thought rather that they were seeing a ghost. By seeing him, and hearing him, and eating with him, and touching him, they finally came to believe. So why is Thomas singled out as the [...]

Isaiah 50:4-7; Philippians 2:6-11; Matthew 26:14—27:66 Anyone who was alive at the time can usually tell you exactly where they were, and what they were doing when they heard the news of the assassination of John F. Kennedy. On September 11, 2001 time stood still as the entire world looked on in horror as we witnessed the destruction of the World Trades Center. As we watched we realized that life as we had known it was changed for ever. Anyone who has ever been in an automobile accident can usually recount every second that ticked by as the accident occured. We discover that our spouse has been unfaithful, or we receive the news of the sudden and tragic death of one we love and again we know that life will never be the same. When we are face to face with the reality of shocking events it is as though time stops. We can remember every single detail of the event re-living it over and over in our memories. This is the experience the Church places before us each year on this most holy of days. We retell the story, a story that should be embedded in the heart and soul of every believer, as [...]
