What are the origins and significance of the Easter celebration? Easter was the first feast celebrated by the early church, commemorating Jesus’ resurrection. This rich and glorious event celebrated the reality that Jesus, who had been killed, was experienced as alive. Sunday was chosen as the day of communal gathering and celebration because, according to the Gospels, it was on Sunday that Jesus rose from the dead. Easter was the primary feast, reenacted each Sunday, which traditionally became known as a “little Easter.” The Easter celebration is associated with the Jewish Passover, the commemoration of the freedom experienced by the Hebrew people when they were released from Egyptian slavery. Jesus’ last supper is recounted as a Passover meal by Matthew, Mark and Luke. The Jewish Passover backdrop of liberation from slavery provided the context for understanding Easter as the liberation of Christians from slavery due to sin. Jesus died on the cross for our sakes so that we might no longer be slaves to sin. The Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night is the joyous celebration of that resurrection reality in our lives. The community immerses itself in darkness, only to have the darkness shattered by the light of Christ [...]

A special blessing of throats occurs on the feast of St. Blaise, February 3. What is the origin of this? St. Blaise, Biagio in Italian, Blasco or Blas in Spanish, was a bishop of Sebaste, Armenia, in modern Turkey, who was martyred for witnessing to the faith. He was tortured and beheaded for his beliefs by the local Roman governor around AD316. This is all that is known about him, the rest being legend. We know much more about devotion to and the popularity of St. Blaise than historical facts. The special blessing of throats associated with St. Blaise is due to a miracle attributed to him. While in prison, he miraculously saved a boy choking on a fish bone. Early in the sixth century, evidence exists in the Eastern Church that Blaise was prayed to for aliments of the throat. To this day, his feast is a holy day in the Eastern Church. In the ninth century, veneration of St. Blaise came to the Western church and became very popular. Blessing of the throats with crossed candles began in the 1500s, the height of devotion to St. Blaise, and that blessing is still part of the devotion of the [...]

Our Lady of Guadalupe The largest annual gathering of Catholics in the United States takes place each year in the Chicago suburb of Des Plaines, Illinois when over 125,000 people gather at the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe on her feast. Each year the number has grown as devotion to the patroness of the Americas continues to spread. It is not uncommon to see local grocery stores and large retailers carry seven-day votive candles emblazoned with the image of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. When the Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin in 1531 on Tepeyac hill she was dressed as an Aztec princess and pregnant with the child who would be ruler of all. She told Juan she wanted to “give my love, compassion, help, and defense, for I am your most devoted mother?to hear your laments and to remedy all your miseries, pains, and sufferings.” The comforting words of a mother looking out for her children are one of the most vivid perceptions of what Our Lady of Guadalupe means to Catholics today. Whether one is an immigrant from Mexico, or someone who has lived here a long time, Mary’s maternal care is a reminder of [...]

We just celebrated the feast of the Guardian Angels on Saturday. I suspect most of us didn’t even avert to it, since we were busy about other things. Saturday is often the day for yard work, children’s sports, household projects, shopping, or other things that we don’t have time for during the week. Thinking about guardian angels was likely not one of the top priorities on our agenda. Yet the feast comes and goes each year on October 2 in honor of those spiritual beings who watch over and protect in realms beyond our physical apprehension. Angels worship and serve God, and we have almost no awareness in our daily lives of their presence. The reality of angelic presence is not what is so often portrayed in cartoons as little beings sitting on one’s shoulder. Rather, it is the deep understanding of the abiding presence of God: that God cares for each one of us individually and that God’s providence protects us. Like the servants in today’s Gospel, that go about their business day by day, so do the angels who serve at God’s throne. Unknown and unheralded, they do the bidding of the Almighty. In the business world, an [...]

June 24 celebrates the feast of the birth of John the Baptist. How was that date chosen and why? The date set for John the Baptist’s birth only came into existence once the date to celebrate Jesus’ birth was set. Evidence shows that by the middle of the fourth century Christians were celebrating the birth of Jesus around December 25. No one at that time knew when Jesus was born, but the date seemed to be selected to counter the Roman festival to the sun god. Once December 25 had been selected for the birth of Jesus, a number of other dates could be set, using the Biblical evidence at hand. When the angel appeared to Mary and she conceived, Mary’s cousin, Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist, was in her sixth month. If Jesus was born on December 25, then he had to be conceived nine months before, on March 25. If Elizabeth on March 25 was in her sixth month, then John the Baptist was due to be born three months later on June 25. Then why June 24? A rather convincing reason stems from John’s witness to Jesus in John’s Gospel. There John the Baptist says [...]

Our prayer group is discussing ways we can change and strengthen our faith. What one thing could we change that would have the greatest impact on our faith? A famous coach once said that when the team is in trouble and things aren’t going well, go back to the basics; when the team is winning and things are going well, go back to the basics! Any renewal program, faith development, or spiritual growth effort has to start with the basic core of what it means to believe. If the foundation is not strong, the house will not stand. So if you work on one thing, begin with the idea that God is love, who loves us and calls us to love one another. If we really take that belief to heart, it changes how we see God, ourselves and one another. It would change how we pray, how we treat others and how we understand and live our own life. Our sense of mission and purpose will be more focused on God’s plan and our role in it. Love is the core of faith, the goal of life and the hope of heaven. Whatever we do to strengthen and deepen [...]

(Video and discussion) What does the large Easter candle mean? The Easter Vigil begins in darkness as a symbol of Christ’s tomb, as well as of the multiple occasions when darkness enters our lives. The parish community, with unlit candles, gathers outside in the darkness around dry, dead wood that will soon be brought to life by a spark. The resulting flame dispels the darkness while symbolically affirming our resurrection belief. A tall, large, decorative candle is lit from the Easter fire, symbolizing the risen Christ, the light of the world. This Easter candle is the prominent Easter symbol of the risen Christ, of his Pasch or Pass-over from death to new life. As we process into church proclaiming Christ as our light, individual candles are lit from the Easter candle and we share Christ’s light with others. Once all have gathered with lit candles, the Exultet, a hymn of joy and praise to God for the gift of new life in Christ, is chanted. The Easter candle is prominently placed in the sanctuary as a constant reminder of the risen Christ and our undying hope for resurrection. The Easter candle is kept lit during all the liturgical celebrations of [...]
