North Dakota is one of only a handful of states that offer tax credit for charitable gifts and endowment development. The 2007 North Dakota Legislative Session created an income tax credit specifically for charitable gifts made to qualified endowments by businesses, and the law expands the current income tax credit for individual planned gifts to charities. Nativity Church of Fargo was instrumental in the creation of this law, which allows for the following: The legislation created a new state income tax credit for gifts made to qualified endowments. A qualified endowment is defined within this legislation as an “irrevocable fund held by a North Dakota incorporated or established organization that is a qualified nonprofit organization; or a bank or trust company holding the fund on behalf of a qualified nonprofit organization.” Funds established with Nativity Church of Fargo do qualify under this law. The new credit for gifts to endowments is equal to 40% of the value of the gift, with a $10,000 annual cap. Any unused amount of the credit can be carried forward three years. The new credit for gifts to endowments is available to corporations. It is also available to partnerships, S corporations or limited liability companies, [...]

Be a pillow of the Church? This message might make you think of an old Saturday Night Live routine about a character who never quite correctly heard what was said. “What’s this I hear about a pillow of the Church? Oh, pillar of the Church. Never mind…” But this is intentional. We’ve all heard of referring to some as “pillars of the Church” – a compliment offered about those who are upstanding, strong and “holding up the structure.” But upon careful analysis of the image, it doesn’t seem to be very warm or flexible. As with all symbolic language, it is both enriching and limited at the same time. The image of “pillow of the Church” is quite different. It is supportive of the structure, but in a softer and gentler way. Pillows can represent comfort, nurturing and intimacy – an insightful image for how we want to help the women and children currently staying at the YWCA Emergency Shelter. Our Thanksgiving collection this year will be given to the YWCA Shelter. It has been a challenging time as they have tried to meet the needs of the many, many women and children who have needed shelter there this fall. [...]

October 16, is World Food Day. Saturday, October 17, is International Day for Eradication of Poverty, and Sunday, October 18, is both Mission Sunday and Bread for the World Sunday. All of these days fall within Fighting Poverty with Faith Week and during the historic Catholic Bishops’ Synod on Africa in Rome. Some might question what difference a day – or a week – makes, but each of these commemorations can help us focus on the needs of others – in our own community, in our nation and across our world. They can both educate and motivate us to make the most of the opportunities each day – and week – presents to share our love through caring for some of the world’s most vulnerable people. Our local “hunger workers” tell us that the need is great in our own community. Groups that Nativity’s Care and Share Ministry supports, such as Churches United for the Homeless, the Dorothy Day House, the Salvation Army and the Emergency Food Pantry, can especially use donations and volunteers. The “Fill the Dome” project is gearing up now for a community -wide effort, and our neighbor to the south, the YWCA Shelter, is in need [...]

Durk Thompson, Executive Director of Churches United for the Homeless, recently sent a note of thanks to Nativity for our monthly support, as well as the following update: “September is National Hunger Awareness Month. During this month please take the time to reflect on the 1 in 12 people in our community who rely on food support to provide for themselves and their families. Already this year, Churches United for the Homeless has provided over 63,000 meals to our residents and the community at large. In addition, our food pantry has been able to help 1640 individuals with almost 60,000 pounds of food. Starting on Tuesday, September 15th, we are increasing our food pantry hours of operation from 1-4 hours weekly. You can help not only Churches United but our entire community by supporting the Homeless and Hungry event the first weekend in October, groups “Trick or Canning” for Halloween, and the third Fill the Dome event in late November. Together we can feed the hungry and share in the gift of giving as a community.” Watch for more information on hunger in the coming weeks.

I want to thank you all for your wonderful support! I know I am not as communicative as Fr. Jack Davis, who has very efficient channels of communication; but I do try to be faithful to the Spirit of Nativity! That spirit has driven me for the last 30 years. We have been operating a meal service for the elderly 3 days a week and I continue to help 3 orphans who lost their mother to T.B. and their father is an addict who lately, thank God, has been detoxing. Their grandmother takes care of them and your support helps feed them! My parish, Sta. Teresa, has become a mega parish with 15 regular weekend liturgies plus weddings and quincineras Saturdays. We have a children’s mass Saturday at 7 p.m. and then Sunday we start at 7 a.m., followed by 8,9,10,11:15,12:30,1:45,4,5,6,7,8:15,9:30p.m. 10:30 p.m. The 1:45 mass is a baptismal mass where we baptize between 20 and 30 people. The 10:30 PM mass we started because of the influenza, so as to have a mass where there are less people. We had thought of removing it later, but there seems to be a need for liturgy at that hour, since many [...]

We recently received a gracious thank-you from Churches United for the Homeless for our on-going monthly financial support through Nativity Care and Share. The following update was also included. We are now just over half way through the year and we are very pleased with all we have been able to accomplish through our volunteers and financial supporters. For the past few months we have been diligently working on sprucing up our shelter and wanted to share with you some of the projects that have been completed. All of our family rooms received new paint, carpeting, and window treatments through the efforts of the Keller Williams Realty group and the many vendors they brough together for this project. Our dining room was completely repainted by members of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church of Moorhead. Karen Bakke painted a large cheerful mural in the family lounge and also in a number of the family rooms. Moorhead High School’s Student Council spruced up the outside grounds and our children’s playground area. Volunteers from the United Way’s Day of Giving finished painting the family/womens’ lounge and also our new Food Pantry. Both Gate City Bank and Hope Lutheran donated large freezers for our kitchen. [...]

Fr. Scott McDermott grew up in Fargo and attended Nativity Church with his family. As a youngster, he was an altar server and still credits his dedication to his faith to the Nativity family he grew up with. Fr. Scott is currently serving as a priest in the Diocese of Monterrey, Mexico at the parish of Santa Teresa. Monterrey is the 3rd largest city in Mexico and, according to Fr. Scott, is a city of two extremes – the extremely poor and some of the wealthiest people in the country. Nativity parishioners help Fr. Scott with his ministry through the Social Justice disbursement. Fr. Scott has used the money to help young people pay for books for college, bus fares to attend classes and food for orphaned children. He has said in the past that an education is one of the best defenses a young person has against continuing the cycle of poverty in Monterrey. Submitted by Marsha Holman
