Years ago I invested in some companies that-I am now discovering-may have caused medical problems or hardships on the public. How do I ensure that my investments are made in the spirit of good stewardship? Stewardship is one of the qualities of a good Christian. We use the gifts and resources that God gives us to their best advantage and use. Being concerned about the impact our investments have on others and whether they are achieving goals consistent with our beliefs, is an important consideration. The bottom line cannot be the final indicator as to where and how we invest our money. One of the great things about computers, and specifically, the Internet, is that it allows you to gather information that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to gather by conventional means. There are specialized investment programs, including annuities and mutual funds, which help support good causes and invest in companies that meet certain criteria for values and public concern. Your financial advisor or local stockbroker’s office can provide you with this information. Or in many dioceses, the financial office or a planned giving office can help with this information. Even if you sacrifice a point or two in [...]

North Dakota is one of only a handful of states that offer tax credit for charitable gifts and endowment development. The 2007 North Dakota Legislative Session created an income tax credit specifically for charitable gifts made to qualified endowments by businesses, and the law expands the current income tax credit for individual planned gifts to charities. Nativity Church of Fargo was instrumental in the creation of this law, which allows for the following: The legislation created a new state income tax credit for gifts made to qualified endowments. A qualified endowment is defined within this legislation as an “irrevocable fund held by a North Dakota incorporated or established organization that is a qualified nonprofit organization; or a bank or trust company holding the fund on behalf of a qualified nonprofit organization.” Funds established with Nativity Church of Fargo do qualify under this law. The new credit for gifts to endowments is equal to 40% of the value of the gift, with a $10,000 annual cap. Any unused amount of the credit can be carried forward three years. The new credit for gifts to endowments is available to corporations. It is also available to partnerships, S corporations or limited liability companies, [...]

Be a pillow of the Church? This message might make you think of an old Saturday Night Live routine about a character who never quite correctly heard what was said. “What’s this I hear about a pillow of the Church? Oh, pillar of the Church. Never mind…” But this is intentional. We’ve all heard of referring to some as “pillars of the Church” – a compliment offered about those who are upstanding, strong and “holding up the structure.” But upon careful analysis of the image, it doesn’t seem to be very warm or flexible. As with all symbolic language, it is both enriching and limited at the same time. The image of “pillow of the Church” is quite different. It is supportive of the structure, but in a softer and gentler way. Pillows can represent comfort, nurturing and intimacy – an insightful image for how we want to help the women and children currently staying at the YWCA Emergency Shelter. Our Thanksgiving collection this year will be given to the YWCA Shelter. It has been a challenging time as they have tried to meet the needs of the many, many women and children who have needed shelter there this fall. [...]

October 16, is World Food Day. Saturday, October 17, is International Day for Eradication of Poverty, and Sunday, October 18, is both Mission Sunday and Bread for the World Sunday. All of these days fall within Fighting Poverty with Faith Week and during the historic Catholic Bishops’ Synod on Africa in Rome. Some might question what difference a day – or a week – makes, but each of these commemorations can help us focus on the needs of others – in our own community, in our nation and across our world. They can both educate and motivate us to make the most of the opportunities each day – and week – presents to share our love through caring for some of the world’s most vulnerable people. Our local “hunger workers” tell us that the need is great in our own community. Groups that Nativity’s Care and Share Ministry supports, such as Churches United for the Homeless, the Dorothy Day House, the Salvation Army and the Emergency Food Pantry, can especially use donations and volunteers. The “Fill the Dome” project is gearing up now for a community -wide effort, and our neighbor to the south, the YWCA Shelter, is in need [...]

Recycling is a great way to help God’s wonderful creation. I believe it is very important to recycle. After all it is the least you can do to thank God for the wonderful creation. With all the landfills filling up with trash, recycling is one way to help cut down on our waste. I strongly encourage you to start recycling in your house. Recycling includes plastic bottles, aluminum cans, cardboard, newspaper, magazines, tin ans, and phone books. My family and I recently went on a week long trip and there were 14 of us. I was collecting recycling and there ended up being 3 big garbage bags full of recycling and that was just aluminum cans and plastic bottles. It is also good to recycle while on vacation because there is often a lot more recycling that is getting thrown away. Please strongly consider recycling in your house and it will make the earth more enjoyable for all of us. Written By Luke D. Rotunda Student at Sullivan Middle School Used with permission

Durk Thompson, Executive Director of Churches United for the Homeless, recently sent a note of thanks to Nativity for our monthly support, as well as the following update: “September is National Hunger Awareness Month. During this month please take the time to reflect on the 1 in 12 people in our community who rely on food support to provide for themselves and their families. Already this year, Churches United for the Homeless has provided over 63,000 meals to our residents and the community at large. In addition, our food pantry has been able to help 1640 individuals with almost 60,000 pounds of food. Starting on Tuesday, September 15th, we are increasing our food pantry hours of operation from 1-4 hours weekly. You can help not only Churches United but our entire community by supporting the Homeless and Hungry event the first weekend in October, groups “Trick or Canning” for Halloween, and the third Fill the Dome event in late November. Together we can feed the hungry and share in the gift of giving as a community.” Watch for more information on hunger in the coming weeks.

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, and planned by the Central Labor Union. In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and hold a “workingmen’s holiday.” The idea spread, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country. In 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a federal holiday. Labor Day was to be observed with a street parade to exhibit to the public “the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations” of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families.
