“Shelter the Homeless”, one of the Corporal Works of Mercy, is taken very seriously by the people of Nativity, as evidenced by the generous support given to the Dorothy Day House, Churches United for the Homeless, the Salvation Army and the YWCA Shelter. But the people of Nativity want to go beyond emergency shelter to help people stay in their homes, as is the focus of Presentation Partners in Housing, one of our Care and Share Ministries, and even to create new homes, as our recent Habitat for Humanity Apostles Build has done. This spring we have the opportunity to participate in a wonderful project sponsored by a group that shares our desire to do more, Beyond Shelter, Inc. This group is constructing the Cooper House, permanent supportive housing for people coming out of homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless. The forty-three rental units are scheduled for completion by May 1st. The project follows the “housing first” model that believes getting people into stable housing and bringing appropriate services to them is the best way to improve their lives and also benefit the community. For long-time Fargo residents, the name was chosen because the building is constructed at the [...]

Catholic Relief Service’s President Ken Hackett has sent us this news about their work in Haiti: While roads are starting to clear and food and aid are reaching hundreds of thousands of people, the needs are still enormous in Haiti. Toppled buildings, sprawling camps and tented homes set up on the roadside are sobering reminders of the long road ahead. New fears loom about the oncoming rainy season and the critical needs for emergency shelter and sanitation. “It’s going to turn into Woodstock out there,” says Lane Hartill of Catholic Relief Services, as he explains that the grass has all but worn away under the tents in Pétionville at the former golf course turned into a CRS-led organized camp that attracts as many as 50,000 people during the day and up to 80,000 at night. To help prepare for the coming rains, CRS and our partner, Caritas Haiti, have ordered materials for 20,000 temporary shelter kits, and are planning for more. Nevertheless, we are making strides daily and reaching more people than ever. CRS and Caritas Haiti are distributing an average of 62 metric tons of food per day. In addition to Pétionville, CRS has been designated as lead agency [...]

Be a pillow of the Church? This message might make you think of an old Saturday Night Live routine about a character who never quite correctly heard what was said. “What’s this I hear about a pillow of the Church? Oh, pillar of the Church. Never mind…” But this is intentional. We’ve all heard of referring to some as “pillars of the Church” – a compliment offered about those who are upstanding, strong and “holding up the structure.” But upon careful analysis of the image, it doesn’t seem to be very warm or flexible. As with all symbolic language, it is both enriching and limited at the same time. The image of “pillow of the Church” is quite different. It is supportive of the structure, but in a softer and gentler way. Pillows can represent comfort, nurturing and intimacy – an insightful image for how we want to help the women and children currently staying at the YWCA Emergency Shelter. Our Thanksgiving collection this year will be given to the YWCA Shelter. It has been a challenging time as they have tried to meet the needs of the many, many women and children who have needed shelter there this fall. [...]
