Proverbs 8: 22-31; Romans 5: 1-5; John 16: 12-15 Names are important to us. When God made all of the creatures of the world, God brought them to Adam so that Adam might name them. When a child is born, one of the very first things we do is give that child a name. By knowing a person’s name we can begin to know things about that person and eventually enter into a relationship with that person. The focus of today’s celebration is the name we have for God, “Trinity.” We know our God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God revealed this name to us so that we might enter into the union of intimacy which God shares as Father, Son, and Spirit. We have many other names for God: the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the almighty, all-powerful, everlasting, ever-present One. These names gain their richest meaning though when we begin to see ourselves in light of them. We, who are created in the image and likeness of God, have an intimate connection to the almighty, the all-powerful, the everlasting. Our first reading tells us that wisdom has been present from the very beginning [...]

5th Sunday of the Year – Cycle C 2010+ Isaiah 6:1-8; 1 Corinthians 15:1-11; Luke 5:1-11 Polls of Catholic churches across the United States give a rather alarming statistic. “The average Catholic parish in North America has fewer than ten percent of its registered members involved in various parish activities.” What this means is that when we take all of the people that are actively involved in Faith Formation, those on various active committees, those doing social outreach, those working in liturgy and music, those involved with the day to day ministry of their parish, and those giving of their time and talent in our Catholic Schools, the total amounts to only about 10 percent of the entire Catholic population of America. While I find this statistic disturbing, I am not at all surprised by it. When I look around at the parishes I have served, the people who do most of the work tend to be a few. While involvement in our parish may be slightly higher than the national average (Midwesterners have the highest rate of parish involvement) it is still an easily provable fact, that a small percentage of people in this parish, are doing most of [...]

Having entered the flu season our bishop, along with many other leaders in the church have asked to consider a few of the ritual practices of our liturgy; specifically the issue of exchanging the sign of peace, and sharing from the common cup. Let me begin my remarks by stating clearly that it is not a sin to miss mass when you are ill. If you are ill please stay home and take care of yourself. This will also help to prevent from giving whatever you have to others. This draws our attention to another important consideration. Avoiding the flu should not be seen as a shunning or staying away from people who are sick. It is about protecting yourself against infection. Listen to the medical professionals and wash your hands frequently. Sneeze or cough into your elbow. If you are sick be courteous by staying away from others. Here at Nativity we have had the longstanding custom of receiving communion under both forms of bread and wine. It is important to note that for many centuries no one was allowed to receive the precious blood except the clergy. It has been the teaching of the Church that to receive [...]

How do the readings from Sunday’s liturgy link to the celebration of Priesthood Sunday? This Sunday we celebrate Priesthood Sunday, an opportunity to thank God for the service and ministry of many great and wonderful priests who help us deepen our relationship to God and others. The Lectionary readings for this Sunday offer significant insights into the ministry of priesthood. The first reading from Isaiah speaks of God’s servant who willingly suffers so that others might be brought closer to their God. Jesus modeled this servant ministry and calls all to that same ministry. Priests take on this ministry as a lifetime commitment. The second reading from Hebrews calls all ministers, especially priests, to be people who, like Jesus, can sympathize with the weakness of others. Such priests know how to connect with people. This connection enables priests to offer guidance and deepen the connection to God and others. In the Gospel reading from Mark, Jesus emphasizes that anyone willing to follow him must be ready and willing to suffer for the sake of others. Priesthood involves a lifelong willingness to imitate Jesus. Priests are willing to pay the price. Today, take time to thank priests who give of themselves [...]

I want to thank you all for your wonderful support! I know I am not as communicative as Fr. Jack Davis, who has very efficient channels of communication; but I do try to be faithful to the Spirit of Nativity! That spirit has driven me for the last 30 years. We have been operating a meal service for the elderly 3 days a week and I continue to help 3 orphans who lost their mother to T.B. and their father is an addict who lately, thank God, has been detoxing. Their grandmother takes care of them and your support helps feed them! My parish, Sta. Teresa, has become a mega parish with 15 regular weekend liturgies plus weddings and quincineras Saturdays. We have a children’s mass Saturday at 7 p.m. and then Sunday we start at 7 a.m., followed by 8,9,10,11:15,12:30,1:45,4,5,6,7,8:15,9:30p.m. 10:30 p.m. The 1:45 mass is a baptismal mass where we baptize between 20 and 30 people. The 10:30 PM mass we started because of the influenza, so as to have a mass where there are less people. We had thought of removing it later, but there seems to be a need for liturgy at that hour, since many [...]

The beauty of the environment of Nativity is no accident. The accents of color and the fragrance of living plants and cut flowers enhance our liturgy. Those planning each design must care for the large worship space, emphasize the church season, and add to the worship. Hospitality and welcome are reflected in the care taken to beautify the entrance. That artistic creation and reflection of God’s beautiful bounty is the gift of many volunteers who share their time and talent with us.
