Genesis 12: 1-4; 2 Timothy 1: 8-10; Matthew 17: 1-9 Hopefully every one of you, at some time or other in your life, has had what I like to call a “mountaintop experience.” This is an experience like Peter, James and John had when they saw our Lord transfigured before them. It is one of those experiences that so fills you with peace, joy, and well-being that your only response is “it is good to be here” (Mt 17:4). Perhaps it happened for some of you on your wedding day. For others it might have been when you held your newborn child for the first time. Still others it might have been when you sat by the bedside of a loved one as they took their final breath and left this world. Such experiences usually are rare in life and for this reason we cannot cling to the moment but must instead come down from the mountaintop and return to the real world. Each of these experiences, however, is an opportunity for us to respond to God. These moments, filled with grace, are given to us so that we can allow this grace to be extended through our works into [...]

1] Ecclesiastes 1:2; 2:21-23; Colossians 3:1-5,9-11; Luke 12:13-21 It was not uncommon for people in Palestine to take their unsettled disputes to respected Rabbis; but Jesus refused to be mixed up in anyone’s disputes about money. Instead, Jesus used this request as an opportunity to teach a lesson about the proper attitude his followers should have towards material things. To those who had an abundant supply of possessions Jesus spoke this parable of the Rich Fool. And so I would argue that for most of us sitting here today, Jesus is speaking this parable to us. For we live at a time, in a place, where we have an abundance of possessions, quite frankly more than we could really even use in this life. And so to us, Jesus teaches us two things which stand out about this man. First, he never saw beyond himself. There is no other parable which is so full of the words, I, me, my and mine. Someone once described these words as “aggressive pronouns.” You might say he was aggressively self-centered. When this man had an excess of goods the one thing that never entered his head was to give any away. His whole [...]

Be a pillow of the Church? This message might make you think of an old Saturday Night Live routine about a character who never quite correctly heard what was said. “What’s this I hear about a pillow of the Church? Oh, pillar of the Church. Never mind…” But this is intentional. We’ve all heard of referring to some as “pillars of the Church” – a compliment offered about those who are upstanding, strong and “holding up the structure.” But upon careful analysis of the image, it doesn’t seem to be very warm or flexible. As with all symbolic language, it is both enriching and limited at the same time. The image of “pillow of the Church” is quite different. It is supportive of the structure, but in a softer and gentler way. Pillows can represent comfort, nurturing and intimacy – an insightful image for how we want to help the women and children currently staying at the YWCA Emergency Shelter. Our Thanksgiving collection this year will be given to the YWCA Shelter. It has been a challenging time as they have tried to meet the needs of the many, many women and children who have needed shelter there this fall. [...]
