I am not old enough to remember the Latin Mass. Before Vatican II, was the Mass always in Latin? For many centuries, the Mass was in Latin, but prior to the eighth century, it was not. In the early church, the Eucharist was celebrated in the context of Jewish rituals and prayers, so obviously the language used was Hebrew and Aramaic. In the first centuries in Rome, Greek was the language used, but as Latin came to be more universally used by clerics and the faithful, it gradually replaced Greek. In the rest of Europe, the local language was used. Latin became the standard of the Mass around the eighth century, though a universal ritual was not established until the Council of Trent, hence the Tridentine Mass. The development of the ritual of the Mass is very interesting indeed. It is important to note that the essential elements of the Mass were always present: readings from Scripture, the words of consecration, the use of bread and wine, and Communion. It was at Trent that the prayers and rituals were standardized and remained unchanged for the four hundred years before Vatican II. A good history of the church would be a [...]

With Christmas fast approaching, can you give me some practical tips to prepare myself and my family that will help us “stay grounded” in what this holiday is really about? With all the commercialism, it’s easy to stray… Happy times and events bring fond memories and a renewed sense of love and kinship with others. The anticipation is half the joy of the event itself. The coming of the Lord is that kind of event that people have been looking forward to for generations with fervent hope and desire. It gave them strength and courage as they waited for the coming of the Lord. We know that Christmas is rushed. Sales begin in August and carols blare long before the season begins. Everyone laments the commercial aspects of the season, but as Advent begins, do something to help you be more mindful of the Lord’s coming. Use an Advent wreath, or enthrone the Bible prominently, or read the readings from the Bible assigned to each day. Postpone the tree and decorations until closer to Christmas. Establish new family rituals, customs and prayers that help remind everyone that we are preparing to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Fasting, daily Mass, a [...]

We offer these suggestions as a Catholic approach to sharing your faith with family and friends. Say “I will pray for you” to a friend who has shared some personal concern or difficulty. Respond “Thank God” when someone shares a success story with you. Make the sign of the cross as you pray before a meal in a restaurant. Display a religious article in the main rooms of your home. Invite someone who has been away from the Church for a while to attend Mass with you. Devote a specific amount of time to your daily prayer life. It is impossible to maintain a relationship with anyone without communication. Prayer should be viewed as a dialogue with God, not a monologue. Make sure you allow time for quiet reflection and listen with your heart to what the Lord tells you. Offer to help your neighbor even when it’s not convenient. Take time in your life for those who are suffering or in need. Remember, people are more important than tasks. When you see God working in your life, point it out to others. We are all enriched by the personal witness of others. Talk to friends about the good experiences [...]

Genesis 18:20-32; Colossians 2:12-14; Luke 11:1-13 The disciples came to Jesus with the request, “Lord, teach us to pray.” In reply Jesus gave us some of the most familiar words to Christians, “The Lord’s Prayer.” Luke’s version is worded differently than Matthew’s from which we derive the memorized prayer. But the first lesson we learn about Jesus’ prayer is that it is all about God and what wants for us: “Father, hallowed be your name, Your kingdom come” (Luke 11:2b) “Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:9) Our prayer is not just supposed to be about what we want, or what we think we need. Prayer is discovering what God’s will is for us and then asking for the grace to conform our will to God’s will. To this some would say, “Then what is the point of praying if we only end up getting what God wants instead of what we want?” The point is this. We know that we would do the same if we were God. We would not give our child a snake if he asked for a fish. But neither would we give her a snake if she asked [...]

Does watching Mass on TV fulfill my Sunday obligation? In the age of instant communication, e-mail, voice mail and teleconferencing, many people wonder if these media of communication can be used for sacraments. Many priests, I am sure, have had people ask about going to confession on the phone. While it may seem like a convenient way to do things, there are many reasons why we don’t. Watching the Mass on television can be a good thing for those who are shut-in. But it really doesn’t fulfill our obligation. The obligation to attend Mass is more than just to simply listen to the Mass or to follow the prayers and the readings. Gathering together as a community of faith is important. Sacraments are community events where we encounter God and one another. When we gather together we are most visibly the church, the body of Christ. Besides, television is a one-way medium. It allows us to watch without really being able to give a response. In faith, our response is as important as anything that we hear. We need to take an active part in the religious expression of our community. ©2009 Liturgical Publications Inc Used with permission, Nativity Church [...]

Are there right and wrong ways to pray? Think of all the ways that people communicate with one another: Post-its, cell phones, fax machines, letters, e-mail, voice mail, movies, videos and of course, the old reliable telephone. All are ways in which we enhance the most basic form of communication-talking. At times, some are more appropriate than others. A wedding invitation is usually not faxed, and love letters are normally not written on Post-its. But in a pinch, any method will do. Prayer is much the same way. There is no right or wrong way to pray. We approach God in prayer, in different ways, at different times in our life. Sometimes our prayer is spontaneous and free flowing; other times, it is more formal and communal. Memorized prayers may bring us more comfort and new experiences of prayer may help us with a deeper insight into God. The situation, setting, and our emotions will determine what fits best. If there is a general “right way” to pray, it would probably be that our prayer be genuine, heartfelt and done with love and confidence. Even in our darkest hours, the Lord is present with us. We may not feel as [...]

Why do we pray to saints? We really don’t pray to saints as much as we ask them to pray with and for us. In the same way we ask other people to pray for us, we ask saints for their intercession and their spiritual assistance. So that just as I ask my friend to pray I can also call upon St. Ambrose, St. Augustine, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Francis de Sales, St. Theresa, St. Francis and ask their intercession and their prayers. We believe that because the saints are already in heaven they have a special intercessory power. They are close to our Lord and can petition him on our behalf for the graces and needs that we have. But why ask the saints for prayer? Why do we believe it is possible? One of the four marks of the church (that we pray in the Creed) is that the church is one. The church-past, present and future-is united in faith, purpose and mission. We are united by Christ’s love from which we are never separated. We are one body and in him all time and all people are united. This is the great communion of saints that [...]

I go to confession regularly and try to live my life based on my faith. On one or two occasions I have forgotten to mention a sin, and now do not recall if I ever mentioned it. Are forgotten sins forgiven? We cannot stop the flow of God’s love and mercy, especially when we act with sincere hearts. People often worry that they have not said prayers with enough devotion, or that they have forgotten a grace before meals, and that their human weakness (i. e., loss of memory) is cause for God to be offended. When we strive to do the right thing and we honestly seek to live our faith, our foibles and miscues are not occasions of sin, but gentle reminders that we are human and imperfect. God loves us anyway! So when we fail to live up to our own expectations of perfection, because of lack of sleep, memory lapse, illness or whatever, we do not sin. And yet, people will often confess that they missed Mass because they were in the hospital! Our judgment is much stricter than God’s!
