Lectionary Year A focuses on the Gospel of Matthew. What are the Gospel’s key concerns and messages? The community that produced Matthew’s Gospel faced a myriad of issues. The Gospel, probably written around 85 AD, addresses a community consisting primarily of Christian Jews who accepted Jesus as their Messiah. This places them in conflict with the majority of Jews in their locale who did not accept Jesus as Messiah. This creates a significant amount of tension. The Matthean community addresses this tension by seeking to clarify its identity. They are still Jews. Yet fellow Jews seem to reject them because of their acceptance of Jesus. How are these Christian Jews to live in light of this conflict? Matthew asserts that their belief in Jesus as the Messiah is correct and had been predicted clearly in the Jewish Scriptures. Those Jews who choose not to see or believe are mistaken. Matthew eventually refers to them as false Jews because of their failure to see, understand and interpret Scripture correctly. Matthew consistently affirms for his community the reality that they are to follow Jesus, who is the new Moses, the new lawgiver, who has challenged them to break boundaries and reach out [...]

“They that hope in the Lord will renew their strength, they will soar as with eagles’ wings; they will run and not grow weary, walk and not grow faint.” Isaiah 41:31 These words from Scripture must have a special place in the hearts of many of those training for the Fargo Marathon. For those of us who try to be “active bystanders,” we are not only inspired by the hard work of the runners but also by the messages some of them carry. If any of you participants would like to communicate the powerful message of Pope Paul VI –“If you want peace, work for justice.” – I have red iron-on transfers with that message that I would gladly share with you. They would look great on a white or light-colored t-shirt. And although I cannot guarantee that you would “run and not grow weary,” I can promise you that I will be on the side lines when you run on Oak Street and cheer you on! For more information, call me at Nativity – 232-2414 or email me at cathys@nativitycatholicchurch. net.

I want to thank you all for your wonderful support! I know I am not as communicative as Fr. Jack Davis, who has very efficient channels of communication; but I do try to be faithful to the Spirit of Nativity! That spirit has driven me for the last 30 years. We have been operating a meal service for the elderly 3 days a week and I continue to help 3 orphans who lost their mother to T.B. and their father is an addict who lately, thank God, has been detoxing. Their grandmother takes care of them and your support helps feed them! My parish, Sta. Teresa, has become a mega parish with 15 regular weekend liturgies plus weddings and quincineras Saturdays. We have a children’s mass Saturday at 7 p.m. and then Sunday we start at 7 a.m., followed by 8,9,10,11:15,12:30,1:45,4,5,6,7,8:15,9:30p.m. 10:30 p.m. The 1:45 mass is a baptismal mass where we baptize between 20 and 30 people. The 10:30 PM mass we started because of the influenza, so as to have a mass where there are less people. We had thought of removing it later, but there seems to be a need for liturgy at that hour, since many [...]
