Catholic Relief Services recently announced the selection of Margaret Bitz as a CRS Fair Trade Ambassador. Margaret’s commitment to justice and especially her enthusiasm for Fair Trade products are well-known to Nativity parishioners, so this recognition of her knowledge, skills and dedication comes as no surprise to us. She will join approximately twenty participants from across the country for additional training in Traverse City, Michigan, in May. Catholic Relief Services uses the term “ambassador” in the context of “word of mouth marketing,” explaining that an issue or product can become widely known when people spread the word about it to family, friends and associates. Fair Trade Ambassadors will explain why Fair Trade is important and how we can participate in CRS Fair Trade programs. When asked about her selection, Margaret replied: “I feel very honored to have been selected by Catholic Relief Services, an arm of the USCCB, to be a fair trade ambassador for the diocese. I feel blessed that I will have this opportunity to advocate for social justice in fair trade.” We look forward to hearing more from Margaret on this important endeavor, and know that we will

Be a pillow of the Church? This message might make you think of an old Saturday Night Live routine about a character who never quite correctly heard what was said. “What’s this I hear about a pillow of the Church? Oh, pillar of the Church. Never mind…” But this is intentional. We’ve all heard of referring to some as “pillars of the Church” – a compliment offered about those who are upstanding, strong and “holding up the structure.” But upon careful analysis of the image, it doesn’t seem to be very warm or flexible. As with all symbolic language, it is both enriching and limited at the same time. The image of “pillow of the Church” is quite different. It is supportive of the structure, but in a softer and gentler way. Pillows can represent comfort, nurturing and intimacy – an insightful image for how we want to help the women and children currently staying at the YWCA Emergency Shelter. Our Thanksgiving collection this year will be given to the YWCA Shelter. It has been a challenging time as they have tried to meet the needs of the many, many women and children who have needed shelter there this fall. [...]

Fr. Scott McDermott grew up in Fargo and attended Nativity Church with his family. As a youngster, he was an altar server and still credits his dedication to his faith to the Nativity family he grew up with. Fr. Scott is currently serving as a priest in the Diocese of Monterrey, Mexico at the parish of Santa Teresa. Monterrey is the 3rd largest city in Mexico and, according to Fr. Scott, is a city of two extremes – the extremely poor and some of the wealthiest people in the country. Nativity parishioners help Fr. Scott with his ministry through the Social Justice disbursement. Fr. Scott has used the money to help young people pay for books for college, bus fares to attend classes and food for orphaned children. He has said in the past that an education is one of the best defenses a young person has against continuing the cycle of poverty in Monterrey. Submitted by Marsha Holman
