“Shelter the Homeless”, one of the Corporal Works of Mercy, is taken very seriously by the people of Nativity, as evidenced by the generous support given to the Dorothy Day House, Churches United for the Homeless, the Salvation Army and the YWCA Shelter. But the people of Nativity want to go beyond emergency shelter to help people stay in their homes, as is the focus of Presentation Partners in Housing, one of our Care and Share Ministries, and even to create new homes, as our recent Habitat for Humanity Apostles Build has done. This spring we have the opportunity to participate in a wonderful project sponsored by a group that shares our desire to do more, Beyond Shelter, Inc. This group is constructing the Cooper House, permanent supportive housing for people coming out of homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless. The forty-three rental units are scheduled for completion by May 1st. The project follows the “housing first” model that believes getting people into stable housing and bringing appropriate services to them is the best way to improve their lives and also benefit the community. For long-time Fargo residents, the name was chosen because the building is constructed at the [...]

This year, as Nativity parish “Walks on as Disciples”, we continue to give back to others in need. The Nativity Youth, under the direction of Jordan Bucchorn, put together a great meal and a grad night for service. The youth served a delicious spaghetti dinner for over 250 people. Families also gathered to cut and tied 20 fleece blankets for the YWCA homeless shelter and the local Linus Project. A room full of children decorated beautiful Valentine cards for our Vets in the VA Hospital. Each card had that special “homemade touch” for our special honored Vets. Thank you so much, faith community of Nativity, for supporting our youth and their activities. All are invited to join us in our parish faith formation endeavors.

Be a pillow of the Church? This message might make you think of an old Saturday Night Live routine about a character who never quite correctly heard what was said. “What’s this I hear about a pillow of the Church? Oh, pillar of the Church. Never mind…” But this is intentional. We’ve all heard of referring to some as “pillars of the Church” – a compliment offered about those who are upstanding, strong and “holding up the structure.” But upon careful analysis of the image, it doesn’t seem to be very warm or flexible. As with all symbolic language, it is both enriching and limited at the same time. The image of “pillow of the Church” is quite different. It is supportive of the structure, but in a softer and gentler way. Pillows can represent comfort, nurturing and intimacy – an insightful image for how we want to help the women and children currently staying at the YWCA Emergency Shelter. Our Thanksgiving collection this year will be given to the YWCA Shelter. It has been a challenging time as they have tried to meet the needs of the many, many women and children who have needed shelter there this fall. [...]
