We, members of Nativity Community, live out our baptismal call by distributing communin to those who are ill.  Jesus….”taking the five loaves and two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds.  They all ate and were satisfied….,”  (Matthew 14:19-20)

We who have received Christ’s love and gift of Himself in the Eucharist, respond through a ministry of love and service.  The Eucharist teaches us about human dignity, calls us to a right relationship with God, ourselves and others.  We are transformed and sent forth to fulfill God’s will by sharing our gifts with others through ministry.  (Nativity Church of Fargo)

Are you interested in becoming a Eucharistic Minister of the Sick?
     If you are interested in getting involved in a parish ministry, this may be the one for you.  It only involves  one day a month for approximately 30 minutes to an hour.  Preparation is very simple:  one hour to go over the procedure, obtain a photo ID, and two session of internship.  The internship consists of accompanying a current Eucharistic Minister to learn the procedure.   You also need to become an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion by signing the Request form.
      Those who are sick are so grateful to have the opportunity to receive Jesus while hospitalized.  It is a personal gratifying experience.  We bring communion to only the patients on Sanford South.

Everyone at some time or other will experience illness or suffering. The Gospels relate numerous times of Jesus healing the sick by the laying on of hands or a simple touch.  He healed all who were in need of healing.  The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is a continuation of this healing   ministry of Jesus. 

Who should present themselves for anointing?
            Members of the faithful, of all ages, who are physically/ mentally ill or of old age may present themselves for anointing.   The question to ask yourself, will I benefit from Christ’s healing touch and the prayers of the Church?    Serious illness, disability or impending surgery is good reason to request Anointing.  For a scheduled surgery, anointing can occur prior to admission to the hospital.

When Should the Sacrament of anointing be celebrated?
            Because of its very nature as a sign, the sacrament of the anointing of the sick should be celebrated with members of the Christian Community or members of ones family.  Communal anointing is a powerful witness to the church community.  Those who present themselves for anointing are expressing their dependence on God and acknowledging their own limitations.  

 Where should the anointing of the Sick take place?
1.  Communal anointing usually takes place during the celebration of Mass.
2.  In the Home of a seriously ill person who is confined to the home.
3.  Within the hospital emergency room, ICU, or patient rooms.

The presence of family or friends is encouraged for anointing’s outside of church.

 How do I go about getting anointed if I am in the hospital?
            If you are in the hospital, notify a nurse on the floor.  Tell her/him that you are a Nativity parishioner and would like to be anointed.  She/He will inform the Chaplaincy Office of the hospital who in turn will page one of the Nativity Priest. For other emergency anointing’s, call the parish office and they will page the Priest on call.
