Bishop Kagan to ND Senators: Your Support Crucial for Just Immigration Reform
The North Dakota Catholic Conference has shared this information:
On June 10, 2013, David D. Kagan, Bishop of Bismarck and recent apostolic administrator for the Diocese of Fargo, wrote Senator Hoeven and Senator Heitkamp, adding his voice to those urging the senators to support just and comprehensive immigration reform.
Reiterating the position of the U.S. Catholic bishops, Bishop Kagan noted his support for:
1. Bringing the undocumented population out of the shadows and giving them an opportunity to earn their citizenship, which would help prevent the separation of families and allow them to fully participate in our society;
2. Making family unity as the cornerstone of our nation’s immigration system; and
3. The right of our government to enforce our laws and to secure the border in a way that respects human dignity.
Bishop Kagan called the support of North Dakota’s senators “crucial to its success and ultimate enactment into law” and urged them to oppose amendments that would weaken protections for migrants contained in the bill.
For years the Catholic bishops of the United States have called for comprehensive immigration reform. Please join Bishop David Kagan and the Catholic bishops of the United States in urging the Senate to pass S.744 to comprehensively and humanely reform our broken immigration system.
Call or email Senator John Hoeven and Senator Heidi Heitkamp immediately and ask them to support S.744 and oppose amendments that would weaken the path to citizenship or place undue hardships on immigrant families.
